MISSISSAUGA - Mayor Hazel McCallion was reappointed to the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) at the AMO Annual Conference held in Windsor from August 16 to 18.

“I am honoured to be a member of AMO’s Board of Directors and continue to advocate for strong municipal governments,” said Mayor McCallion. “Cities are the engines of Canada and AMO brings municipalities together to discuss common needs to improve infrastructure and economies.  In my role as a member of the Board and the Large Urban Caucus, I am happy to help shape policy for the Association that will benefit all municipalities in the Province.”

Mayor McCallion’s involvement with the AMO began in 1969 when she was a Regional Councillor for the City of Mississauga.  Over the years, she has held a number of AMO positions including president, vice president and director elected-at-large. She has also been appointed by the AMO to serve on several committees including the Municipal Act Task Force, Electricity Restructuring Task Force, Urban and Regional Task Force, Fiscal and Labour Policy Committee and the Minister of Energy’s Electricity Transition Committee.

“AMO’s Board of Directors benefits from membership from across the Province, reflecting the diversity of Ontario’s municipal governments.  To that end, I am pleased to have Hazel on the 2010-2012 Board team,” said AMO President, Norman Sandberg.  “The Board will continue its efforts to see properly funded municipal governments.”

AMO’s key advocacy priorities are focused on achieving fiscal sustainability for municipal governments, advancing federal, provincial partnerships for infrastructure and strengthening municipal legislative authority to advance local economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.
